Compass
- Base plate or sighting compass
(Note: sighting compasses are harder for beginners to use)
Water / Fluids
- It will likely be hot—plan accordingly
- Water and beverages will be provided at the start and finish
- You must carry hydration during the race
- No minimum amount required
Writing Tools
- Two pens or Sharpies
Mobile Phone
- Fully charged
- Sealed in a waterproof case or double zip-locked bag
- For emergencies only
Charity Challenge Fee$10 total for one charity challenge (Required only if you want assistance with one of the challenges)
Recommended Gear
Hydration
- CamelBak-style hydration system (per person)
Navigation & Protection
- Waterproof map case or double zip-lock bags
- Contact paper or clear tape to waterproof your map and instruction sheet
Footwear & Traction
- Normal running shoes (avoid light mesh uppers)
- Trail shoes with added traction and protection are ideal
- Light hikers are acceptable if you’re comfortable with added weight and stiffness
- Avoid open-toe shoes or sandals
Apparel
- Lightweight, quick-drying materials
- Expect challenges in and around bodies of water
Accessories
- Sunglasses
- Sunblock
Safety
- Small first-aid kit
Prohibited Gear
- GPS devices that allow real-time location on a map (GPS watches permitted for post-race review only)
- Maps other than those provided by race organizers
- Communication devices other than a mobile phone
- Motorized or mechanized means of transport
